Saturday afternoon, my friends and I decided to attend the Pride parade that was occurring all weekend in Brighton. From what I heard from locals, the parade Saturday was going to be huge. They told me that this was because Brighton is the “gay capital of Europe”. This excited our group, as most of us never attended a pride parade and wanted to experience it.
Our group sitting on the sidewalk, waiting for the parade to begin.
Surprisingly for England, the weather was beautifully consistent all day. It was so nice I even had to take my shirt, which many of the men (and some women) had already did. As the parade began, we were all impressed by how intricate and lengthy some of the performances were. Some, such as Queens Against Borders, advocated for causes while simultaneously bringing joy to the parade. This organization is composed of “drag queens” who dissent governments of countries that do not allow refugees asylum into the country. However, other performances were solely intended for comedic purposes. Among these included “Buttlers”, a company that advertised male butlers for hire to clean houses. However, these men did not their behinds covered with clothing, implying the “butt” in “Buttlers”.
One of the more intricate displays.
Nonetheless, the day was great. We were able to experience a pride parade in a fantastic city, and we could tell how much this parade meant to Brighton.
