On June 22, we are given one day to come up a design theme. Every team is composed of three students from Normal University, one Amercian student and one Chinese student who study in the US, so my part time job other than design is the translation. The biggest difficulty is not letting other people’s idea confuse mine when I translate each one.
The translation between the director Daniel and the instructor Mr. Song are done by a professor(Mrs. Liu) from Normal University. In the first day, we have some live example of loss of content during translation. At first, we are been told by Mrs. Liu that Song wants an outdoor public space for tourist, but when we talk to Mr. Song, he said he wants a private space exclusively for the artists. Fortunately, this problem is realized in the early phase of the design, and all the groups have paid more attention to the accuracy of the translation since then.
We can only proceed when we have some understanding of the meaning behind all the sculptures Mr. Song created.Based on what Song told us, his inspiration comes from the Miao tribal culture which has a big colony in this area.(Just to clarify, there are 56 different minority tribes in China, they all have different customs and have different culture). Therefore we start to do some search about the difference of all tribal culture and the legend of their religion.
