In nine days I will be traveling to Thailand to attend the Human Health and the Metropolis: Tensions and Transformations in Southeast Asia program in Bangkok. I am so excited to finally get there although the twenty-three hour travel time is not something I’m looking forward to. I am finally done with finals so it is starting to hit me that I will be embarking in this journey soon. I am so thrilled to be learn about a new culture and engage in traditions of Thai people. I also cannot wait to participate in community service that the program has scheduled for us, its just a way to give back to those who need your assistance. I have never traveled somewhere so far and although the difference in language, food, and culture altogether may be one I am not familiar with I can not wait to learn about them all and experience it for myself!

Pre-Departure

In a little under a month, I will be leaving for my 7 week long study abroad adventure in Iceland with the School for International Training. Now that the stress of final exams has passed, the reality of this trip is starting to sink in and I am counting down the days until my departure.
A few days ago, I received an email from the program director containing more information about the trip, including a detailed description of the coursework and the itinerary. On the first day we arrive, we will be visiting the Blue Lagoon, a very famous geothermal spa located in a lava field. The following day we will be taking a tour of a geothermal power plant and the surrounding geothermal hot springs. More tours similar to this will occur throughout the trip, following along with the theme of sustainable energy resources that is emphasized on this specific program. I am excited to learn more about alternative energy sources, ultimately displaying what I have learned throughout the trip in an independent study project that each student is required to complete by the end of the seven weeks.
For the next two weeks of the program I will be living with a host family in Ísafjörður, the capital of the Westfjords. These two weeks are by far an aspect of the trip I am most looking forward to, as I will be able to experience the true Icelandic lifestyle, living among the locals of a quaint fishing town that is rarely visited by tourists. Over the course of these two weeks, I will be taking classes in Energy Technology and Icelandic Language at the University Centre of the Westfjords while also visiting the sites around the area. One of the main reasons I was drawn to this study abroad opportunity in Iceland is the phenomenal scenery and breathtaking views the country has to offer. The homestay portion of this trip will be a fantastic way to truly explore my surroundings, taking in all of this scenery in its rawest form. I am also excited to bond with my homestay family, letting them teach me the ways of their lifestyle.
The remainder of the trip is filled with various excursions, classes, and guest lectures throughout different parts of the country. It is during this time that I will complete and present my individual study project, a compilation and application of the topics I will have been studying over the previous weeks.
So there it is, a pretty good sum up of my quickly approaching study abroad opportunity in Iceland. I don’t think I could be any more excited to get there and start what I am expecting to be a fantastic adventure.
