After spending a nice first day in Belize yesterday seeing the area, visiting the zoo and dropping off the wildlife students, and gathering all of the other pre-veterinary students, finally arrived in San Ignacio the night before and spent our first night at the Midas resort where we would be staying for our course in Belize.
First day jitters though with the first actual day of class!
Not really though because I honestly felt very much at home. Waking up early and having breakfast with everyone was really cute. The school itself was very colorful and bright and the murals were beautiful. Sitting down in the classrooms gave such perspective on the way education goes in Belize.
The windows were open and sometimes it was hard of hearing with the loud black bird outside and the on and off downpour of rain. Lecture was LONG. It was definitely interesting with Cynthia’s intro spiel, and she gave me a long list of things I wanted to do, buy, eat, and see, and I was really excited. Dr. T walked in non-chalantly and emitted really good vibes as he then took over the class and gave us an overview of what we were gonna do during our time in Belize. He continued to go over different breeds of cows and even though it was only a little bit of information that he presented, you could tell that he was well experienced and really knew and was confident in his work. Then this guy from BAHA came to talk about wildlife health, and genuinely became really tired when he started speaking about the economy of it all, which granted is definitely an aspect of wildlife health, but I don’t think I was really feeling it. We then got break for lunch and we split up. Me and my group of 4 other girls walked by a grocery store and found tamarindo which was a favorite childhood candy of one of them (so good btw), got catcalled (lol at the machismo), talked to some lovely Belizians who referenced some food places, and ended up at small place called Mami T’s.Cute and wholesome, the food was great and the two women in the kitchen were so nice.
I LOVE RICE AND BEANS, may I please state this lol. After lunch, we went back to the classrooms but were early, so we went iguana hunting! LOL the iguanas were so pretty and we were really having a hard time getting close enough to take pictures, but oh my god they’re so pretty !!!!!!! Once our TA Lorena and Dr. Stephanie came back, we started lectures again. And they went FAST. It was definitely a lot of info to intake, but I can’t wait to learn it in a more hands on way because I think I learn better that way. I highly commend Dr. Stephanie for presenting all that she did in English because it was definitely hard to essentially translate all of this info from Spanish to English. Thank you Dr. Stephanie 🙂 After a LONG day (we really ended at 5pm WOW), we went back to Midas and my roomie and I chilled on our porch in our hammock and talked and played music and it was so nice. Rubin then took us to this AMAZING smokehouse. I love spending time with the girls so far. And it’s only been my second, not even really, day with them. We spent some time at the pool until almost midnight and we have to wake up at 7:30 again tomorrow HAHAHHA.
