Today is Wednesday, May 9th, and I am leaving for Belize in three days. Well, it’s more like two days since my flight is on the 12th at 6 am. (!!!) I have my last final exam today, and the nerves of this trip are really starting to build. Not bad nerves, just… present nerves. I’ve been easing the nerves by reading past student blogs and seeing what an amazing time they had. It’s really helped a lot.
This past weekend I ran around every store and mall in a 30-mile radius and got all of the things that I need for the trip. That helped reduce…like…25% of the anxiety. And today, I’ve just finished packing all non-clothing items and there seems to be plenty of room left in my suitcase for the clothing and scrubs. All that’s left is to be reunited with my suitcase in Belize City and all luggage-related anxieties about this trip will be alleviated.
I feel like in the Animal Science Department, you always know at least one person that’s gone to Belize for either a summer or winter session. I can’t believe that I get to be one of those people for someone one day. I am going to be taking part in two 2-week CELA: Belize summer courses. My stay in Belize is ranging from May 12th through June 9th. (For my mom who’s reading this and wants to count down the days, that’s 28!!) I’m going to be studying Large Animal Veterinary Practices in the Tropics and Wildlife Health, Conservation and Ecology. The more I say those two courses together in the context of things that I’m going to be doing, the more I sound like I have my life together. (Spoiler alert: I don’t.)

Reading through and seeing the experiences of previous SEBS students in Belize is making me more and more excited that soon that is going to be my memories too. I don’t know how I am going to be away from my dog for 28 days. I’ve asked my mom to email me daily pictures of her to keep me going but who know’s if that will be enough.
I’m not going to lie, I’ve always wanted to be a cool millennial who runs a blog and documents their ideas and experiences. I’ve just never felt as though my thoughts or life were interesting enough for anyone to want to read. But what’s more interesting than working with animals in another country?? So now I get to live out that dream and you get to read along with me! So let’s seeee what this next month has in store for me! :^)
