I am writing this post during my layover in Gatwick Airport in London. I have an approximately 12 hour layover here, so I have lots of time to spare. I am extremely excited to get on my flight to Sweden. I am flying into Gothenburg, Sweden, and then spending the night in a hostel a little a ways from the airport. I am slightly worried about finding my way there, since I am not traveling with any of the other students who are participating in this design/build. The program is through the University of Washington, and I believe that the other students on the trip are all from there.
From Gotheburg I am traveling to Dals Långed, where I will be staying for two months. The town is tiny, with a population of 1,500. It is situated right next to Dalslands Kanal. We are going to be designing and building a public open space to bring together three main communities in Dals Långed, the students at a centrally located university and trade school, the long time Swedish residents, and the immigrants, new and old, from Syria. This project will give me the opportunity to strengthen my design skills, as well as learn so many practical skills like woodworking and basic construction. It’ll be so great. Ok, signing off for now.
Best,
Phia
