I am finally in Germany! I cannot believe I am actually here! So I am going to start this week off from the very beginning, the plane ride. Never leaving America before this journey, my longest plane ride was only 3 hours long, so, I was a little anxious for a 9 HOUR plane ride! That’s tripled the time I have flown in the past! I was really overwhelmed by this but I knew it would be totally worth it when I landed there, and in fact, it totally was. The plane ride had several movies to select from and not bad meals. The only thing I wish for was more leg room, my tall long legs were numb by the end of the ride.
SO, after that obstacle of the plane ride was over, I was finally in the city of Berlin, Germany. The first thing I saw when I got into the city was the needle which was very neat. You don’t see buildings like that ever in America. I was quite disappointed though when I found out it was a television tower, I don’t know why but I expected a building as cool as that one to have a more interesting purpose rather than a television tower. The needle definitely stood out from the rest of Berlin and served as a unique landmark. However, besides looking and walking around the town briefly, I was super exhausted from the plane ride, so the remainder of the first day we didn’t do too much.
When I woke up the second day, I was all caught up in sleep and was definitely ready to go explore around the city and see what it beholds. We started off the day by walking along the Spree River. Along this river is multiple pathways that were heavily used by both pedestrians and bikers. The river banks also had multiple cool features such as unique seating, hammocks, restaurants, and a lot more. It was a nice place to go to during a hot summer day and cool off by the river. When we walked further along the river, we approached the city center which served as an area with important government buildings. This center had the most amazing, beautiful buildings my eyes have ever seen. There was two in particular I want to point out which is the Marie-Elisabeth Luders Haus and Reichstag Building. Here are pictures of both of them. As you can see yourself, these buildings are completely out of the ordinary.
Later on the week, we got to walk around even more and see even more monumental landmarks such as the Brandenburg Gate and Berlin Cathedral. These both were absolutely beautiful as well and both had a lot of visitors. My class and I liked relaxing on the lawn in front of the cathedral and play in the fountain. We all felt like little kids again!
We also visited this beautiful garden called Tiergarten which was gigantic! It was one of the largest green spaces in Berlin and consisted of the Berlin Victory Column. Bunch of visitors were at the park for multiple purposes such as rowing, exercising, sitting and picnicking, and much much more. My favorite area of this park was the Rose Garden. This was an Italian garden located inside of Tiergarten itself and was absolutely beautiful. It had a trellis with vines on it which truly made it feel like an Italian garden.
To wrap up the end of the first week my class and I went to our site where I project was to be taking place at. This was at a Broadcasting station located on Berlin. I will get more into this later on the journey. Safe to say though this was one of the best weeks of my life. Berlin was already better than I expected. To top it all off, I adjusted to the German lifestyle and culture very quickly. Luckily, majority of the people knew English, so that made me feel much more comfortable with the city.
