We went on a walking tour of Oaxaca’s center (El Centro) today. The rainy season hasn’t started yet and I wish it would. It’s super hot and I’ve never sweat this much just walking. I still prefer it over cold weather, so I can’t complain too much. The streets are filled with people, vendors, food, everything you can imagine really. What really catches my eye are the artisan vendors, so I bought myself a handbag because I only brought my backpack to travel. I also bought bark paintings for myself and my workplace. Oaxaca is famous for their chocolate, so we stopped by a Mayordomo and tried their frozen chocolate drinks, which were amazing! 100% recommend for chocolate lovers.
We stepped into the Santo Domingo church and I was astounded by the architecture. Everything seemed to be coated in gold, it was opulent and regal, surely fit for Spanish nobles. As beautiful as the church was, it made me think of the people that actually had to mine the gold, build the church, and those who actually got to pray in it. You can still see the colonial influence in the church, some government buildings, and the city itself. I learned that the Spanish preferred to lay out their cities like grids, so many Latin American cities have this layout. Once I got home and I told my homestay family about my day and that I visited Mayordomo, my homestay dad explained the meaning behind the name. Mayordomo is a kind of title given to the person in charge of holding big festivities. If a town had a marriage or religious event, the mayordomo would be in charge with help from everyone of course.
