June 29th
Today was our goodbye comida. It was very bittersweet and though I was happy, enjoying myself to the music and food, the thought of leaving was in the back of mind the entire time. The group Raices came to play for us, and taught us how to dance to their music so I got my wish from the other night granted. It was very fast-paced and difficult but I tried and was enjoying every minute of it. We got to eat some delicious tamales and talk to the other homestay families and everyone else that made this trip possible and wonderful. I didn’t really feel like going back home so we went to the market and I tagged along with classmates that wanted to shop though I finished mine. I just wanted to continue exploring and soak up whatever else I can before I leave. We first visited the Benito Juarez market where I got to visit a couple places I never seen before including a crystal shop. We walked up to a church my friend wanted to visit and relaxed around the plaza (because it was a climb). The atmosphere was peaceful as there was a lot of people out enjoying the afternoon. We then decided to visit a coffee shop that sells free trade products where I got an affogato, something I never tried before. It was super bitter, but still good surprisingly.
When I got home Darah and I treated our family to pizza which was the best I’ve ever had in my life. There was nothing really special about it, it just seemed to be prepared for me just the way I like it. It basically had no sauce and a bunch of toppings, but it was my dream pizza. But what made it more enjoyable was seeing my host family enjoy it too. We all took pictures and reminisced on our short time here, my homestay mom told us to come back with our moms which I thought was really sweet. I’ll always be grateful to my homestay family, they really felt like a second family, helping me every time I got sick or confused. I’m truly going to miss them.
