June 3rd
I thought yesterday was the most I’ve ever sweat in my life, but today proved me wrong. We woke up early to go on a bike run with Dr. G which started from Oaxaca’s center to the next town, Tule. Darah and agreed on walking to the center, what we did not know is that it would take twenty minutes to get there, so we were a little late. Then it took around 30 minutes for us to get our bikes, but once we were ready we started pretty quickly. Oaxaca street architecture is old so a lot of the streets are cobblestone and not bike ride friendly. It wasn’t bad, just bumpy and hurts your butt after awhile. I haven’t used a bike since I was 12 because my bike got stolen, so I was afraid I was going to fall off. Thank goodness that didn’t happen but I did run into a pole. I heard some music and got distracted so it’s very much my fault, but I laughed through the ordeal. We biked through the city for most of the ride and got to enjoy the sights, but it got better as we were closer to Tule. My legs we’re starting to give out, but we finally got to Tule! After stationing the bike, I got to really take in the town’s atmosphere, it was vibrant, colorful, and filled with greenery. Our first stop was the church where the famous Tule tree was located. It was the widest tree I have ever seen, the biggest in fact, but what was unique was it’s wideness. The tour guides were the cutest because they were all grade school children. They used little lasers to point out natural formations in the bark that look like animals and humans. They were really charming as they shouted out “ and THIS is…”. I then took a stroll in the market and explored for awhile until I found a juice stand, I needed energy for the way back. Once we were done shopping, we left to go back to Oaxaca on that traitorous bike ride. The young men who organized the ride were very nice and encouraging, which I needed. Once we got back we immediately treated ourselves to flavored ice, (myself with an iced latte). Then unfortunately Darah and I decided to walk another 20 minutes back despite every fiber in my legs was crying. Though this sounds masochistic, I had so much fun!
