Today we went on a tour to a couple tourist sites, Hierve El Agua, Mitla, and a mezcaleria. We spent the most time in Hierve El Agua, we hiked for forty five minutes then bathed in the mineral spring. And when I say we hiked, WE HIKED. Again it was hot, but the weather was beautiful with clear blue skies. A little background on Hierve El Agua, it is one of the only natural stalactites that exist outside of a cave, the other existing in Turkey. The rock formations look like a waterfall, so they are called petrified waterfalls. When we took pictures under the rock, there was still some water running and created little puddles under small caves. We then hiked a little more to get to the spring which was cold rather than hot, but still enjoyable. The mineral water healed a wound I had on my ankle! We then went to a buffet that was serving Oaxacan food, including chapulines (grasshoppers) so I had to try them. Apparently the larger ones are juicy while the smaller ones are crunchy, I prefer the smaller ones. We then went to Mitla, which was the city of the dead and go to learn more about Zapotec architecture and history. I even went out of my comfort zone and explored an underground tomb. It was as I expected, musty, but nonetheless super interesting. We then hit the mezcaleria and tried a couple of artisanal mezcals while learning about the process. If you ever decide to try it, please sip, don’t take it as a shot.
