My community organization assignment was to work with a Seguro Popular clinic in Pueblo Nuevo which was a town over. It takes about 45 minutes to get there on bus which is plenty of time to nap since we head over there pretty early. I have a partner that goes with me to the clinic and she does more clinical jobs and shadowing, since I am interested in public health, the promotores de salud (health promoters/ educators) allowed me to work with them. I made a poster dedicated to women’s health and was able to attend a workshop today for the providers of the clinic on lactating mothers. I learned a lot about what doctors consider in care for lactating mothers, even the language they use like the difference between the feminine and masculine use for the word describing a newborn. In English its gender neutral, but in Spanish there is a gender attached to it, that is being changed into feminine. I helped take pictures of the workshop and got to observe the dynamic between all the doctors and nurses, most of them were women. I found out later that there was a time in Mexico where most doctors were women, so it makes sense.
I was a little stressed out because I haven’t finished the poster I was assigned to make for the clinic and I want to get it done soon. The clinic is very busy so there isn’t much pressure from them, but it’s more of a pressure I put on myself. It was nice of them to let me participate in the workshop though.
