It is currently Sunday night and i’m here to recap the end of my week starting with Thursday!
6/13/19 – Today we got to go see a crocodile practicing targeting! It was such a beautiful little river that she was swimming in and luckily we got to be close, but not close enough to get hurt. The crocodile seemed to do pretty well with commands which was shocking to me as they seem to want nothing to do with humans. However, they are very smart and it was intriguing to hear so many awesome things about crocs during lecture. At night, we went back to the zoo and this was one of my favorite nights so far. We got to see animals that nobody gets to see because the zoo closes before it gets really dark. We were with Emmanuel (a zookeeper) going around feeding the animals. Seeing them at night was a little nerve-racking at first but it was really cool.
6/14/19 – The last day before the weekend! Today was pretty laidback and just as before, the huts and the heat were out to get us. Now that we we are at settling is, I started to realize how different the lifestyle is here. Days feel long and time goes by slow. In Jersey, it is the opposite! Today we learned how to blow dart and that was fun. It is something most people don’t learn until they are out of school!
6/15/19 – I am not going to lie, this is a day I was looking forward to all week, the beach! I have never seen a tropical beach before and it was so exciting for me. We had a nice day of relaxing and I got pretty sunburnt but all in all it was even better than I expected. On the way to leave, we stopped by the animal shelter on Caye Caulker to see the dogs and cats and give them some love and a donation. They all seemed to be happy there and that made me so happy.
6/16/19 – Today is Sunday, the last day of the week and we had the option of going to a spay and neuter clinic to help dogs and cats get the basic care they need. I was excited to go, but really nervous because in Belize, things are done differently than in the states. We were so involved and it was amazing. We gave shots, did physical check ups, and assisted in surgery. I recommend that anyone who takes the trip to Belize goes and helps out. Even if you aren’t looking to be a vet!
