We’ve had two full days of classes in Essen so far, and it has been fun and tiring. Yesterday, we visited Phoenix-See, which is a man-made lake surrounded by residential and commercial buildings. We climbed up a really high hill that overlooks the lake to get a view onto the surrounding area, which was awesome, but the climb was literally taking my breath away. The area also had these two orange “panels” that looked like satellite dishes that were on either side of the bridge connecting the two residential areas. These “panels” can act in a similar way to telephones, where you can hear what the person on the other side of the bridge was saying.
Today we visited Dusseldorf and walked through the several parks. At one point, we arrived along the old city gates and got to see the moat that still exists today. A lot of the buildings in Dusseldorf where either completely or partially destroyed and then rebuilt. It was amazing to see how certain buildings looked like they were all from a different time period, but then a more modern building might be right next to it. The mall that sits across the street from our hostel has foundation stones that were from the original building, but the rest of the building is all modern.
