Day 13 last day of class: dairy cows & pigs 1/9/20
We left midas resort at 4:30 am to get to the dairy cattle farm at 5:30 am where I got to milk a dairy cow! It was actually quicker and easier than I expected.
Then, we went to another dairy cattle farm where we all learned about artificial insemination and got to palpate the cervix. It was a little gross because of all the poop coming out but it was fun learning how to palpate and seeing if the cow was pregnant or not.
I ate chicken quesadillas for lunch from hanna’s around 12 pm.
Then we did pig castrations and injections! It was really hard to grab the pigs haha because they are SO strong and fast! But it was such a fun time!!
After, we swam in another lagoon with a mini waterfall!
Then, we ate at an Italian restaurant and I got the Hawaiian pizza 🍕
Later in the night, it was time to study and finish all my homework!
Day 14 Final exam & party 1/10/20
I woke up at 8 am and had fruit with granola and yogurt.
We then went to PAWS veterinary clinic where we had to present our powerpoint presentation. You had to pick a topic about veterinary medicine in Belize and do a powerpoint with a partner or you can do it by yourself. My partner and I did our presentation on the differences of suture technique & spay/neuter between the US and Belize. The US uses the simple interrupted technique with a non-absorbable suture material. Belize uses the inverted interrupted technique with an absorbable suture material. I recommend doing the powerpoint WAY before last minute to get it done. Time flies so definitely be aware
After, we ate lunch at Hodes at 1 pm. For my last lunch meal, I got the Belizean traditional rice and beans!
Then we had an alumni orientation meeting. We saw a slideshow of all of our funny and cute animal group pictures. We also got a “yearbook” where everyone signed each others and wrote cute messages. There was also other forms to fill out such as signing up to be a CELA ambassador, flight information, surveys, class credit transfer documents, etc. I also donated some of my clothes to CAWS which is the Cayo Animal Welfare Society! Clothes such as scrubs are really expensive in Belize so I decided to donate some of mine ❤️
We took our final exam right after orientation. The final exam consisted of short answer, fill in the blank, multiple choice, true and false, and a bonus question. If you are thinking about doing this study abroad, I advise that you ask lots and lots of questions to the veterinarians in Belize as they are doing their job!
Then I packed & got a cheesecake from guava limb! (oK I love guava limb haha)
Around 8 pm we went to Dr. T’s house where we ate a homemade dinner! It was so delicious and great! ❤️ It was also so nice bonding with everyone at our last dinner together.
I then got home later in the day, packed, got ready for my departure for the next day, and went to bed! 💤
Day 15 Departure 1/11/20
I woke up at 7 am and got fruit with yogurt and granola for breakfast.
The van came and picked us up around 7:30 am at Midas resort to bring us to the airport! We went through the whole process (ah) and I waited until my flight arrived. I bought some more souvenirs because I was nervous I didn’t get a lot. But, the souvenirs at the airport are WAY better than the ones in San Ignacio! It was also really nice being with everyone in the study abroad group and being sappy saying goodbye 🥺💖 I’m going to miss them so much! We made so much great memories that I will cherish forever!
I also had to fill out a customs form due to arriving from another country. I strongly advise that any clothes/shoes/objects that you pack is THOROUGHLY CLEAN!! If you are bringing any farm material to the US, you might be quarantined. My friend and I threw our farm boots out actually because of how dirty they were.
My flight was from 1:25 pm-6:34 pm and I arrived home around 8 pm. I enjoyed some American food that I’ve been missing ❤️ And of course I got Dunkin!
I enjoyed having fast wifi, a nice shower, and the souvenirs I bought! Then, I quickly fell asleep!
