Day 7: Spay/Neuter Clinic & Placencia 1/3/20
My roommate and I woke up at 4:32 am and had to be in front of the resort at 4:50 am to meet the rest of the group to be taken to Placencia. We jumped out of bed so fast and changed really quickly. We got to the front of the resort at 4:50 am luckily. But, the bus that had to pick us up didn’t come until an hour later haha. “Running on Belize time” is something that’s hard to get used to haha. Nothing is one time in Belize haha. We got the way back seats so word of advice (TRY TO NOT GET THE BACK SEATS OF THE GROUP BUS’S). We were sweating so much on the THREE hour ride. On the way, I also ate some snacks I brought with me due to no shops being open at 5 am haha. (If you are thinking about taking the course, bring LOTS and LOTS OF SNACKS !! They will ALWAYS be useful)
Around 9 am we got to a veterinary clinic where I got to perform a spay and neuter! I got to cut the uterus for the spays and the vas deferens for the neuters! I also sutured up the skin using the inverted technique (which is mostly preferred in Belize because the animals can’t lick the suture because the knot is inside whereas the knot is on the outside for simple interrupted. And other reasons mentioned previously in my past post. Also Belize doesn’t really provide cones for pets after surgery) We spayed/neutered 36 dogs in total and it was AMAZING. I also learned how to identify testicular cancer in dogs. There was a lot of dogs that had testicular cancer which was sad and also every dog had so many fleas and ticks 🙁 There was one dog that had its neck almost cut open because the chain collar was on too tight. I noticed all of the dogs didn’t have any pet collars or leaches as compared to most Americans. There are a lot of resources Belize (from my experience) doesn’t have access to which is upsetting but it’s awesome that we are all making a big difference in impacting animal health.
At 3:30 pm, I ate lunch which was rice and beans & we were headed to another hotel in Placencia. We were split up so each group of people were in different hotels. The resort I got put in was called the mariposa and it’s connected to the beach which was AMAZING! Although we are not in a resort, we are in a tree hut haha.
I ate dinner around 7 pm & I had the spliff’s smoked chicken with beans, salsa, and cheese.
After, I did my course work & went to bed.
Day 8: Physical exams & Beach day 🏝 1/4/20
I woke up around 6:45 am, got ready, and ate yogurt and a banana nut muffin for breakfast.
From around 8 am- 4 pm, we went to a clinic ran by the Placencia Humane Society. My friend and I did physical exams on dogs! There was this one dog that was SO cute!! He had fleas and ticks all over:( He also had ring worm. We took all the fleas and ticks off & gave him an oral dewormer.
My friends and I went to the beach connected to the resort around 6 pm ! It was SO WARM and CLEAR! Belize gets dark around 5:30 pm because its technically winter in Belize.
We ate dinner at the tipsy tuna in Placencia and I had the buffalo chicken burger with ranch! It was so good!
Then we all fell asleep quickly after
Day 9: Placencia free day 1/5/20
On the way to breakfast, I saw a friendly geico!
For breakfast, I ate cinnamon rolls & fruit with a view of the beach connected to the mariposa resort! 🍉
Then I went to the beach & it was AMAZING! I loved the view of the ocean, palm trees, and coconuts! I also got to see some little fishes swimming & a few dolphins!
We went to a couple shops in downtown placencia and I bought a Marie Sharps spicy pineapple sauce! I’ve never seen Marie Sharps sauces anywhere except for Belize! You can find Marie Sharps sauces in any Belize restaurant. I really enjoy the sauces and I bought the last one! Marie Sharp spices are THE BEST and anyone visiting Belize should try them!! There was also a lot of cultural items that were mesmerizing!
After, we had a long 3 hour drive back to Midas Resort in San Ignacio. Once we arrived, I settled in by putting my stuff away, taking a shower, and sleeping away.
