Day 4 New Years Eve π 12/31/19
I woke up at 7 am to get ready to eat breakfast at 8 am. I had the Belizean breakfast which consisted of refried beans, fry jacks, eggs, pepper jelly, and bacon.
Class started at 9 am in the PAWS veterinary clinic where we had a presentation on how to do a physical exam.
We ate lunch at 12 pm at this Sri Lankan & Belizean mix restaurant called Serendib! It was good but I would rate it a 6.5/10.
After, we learned the different techniques of suturing. We learned all the different types of suture material as well. First, we got to practice simple interrupted and inverted interrupted on a raw chicken. Then, my partner and I got to see a live spay. I got to cut the uterus with the doctor’s guidance. After she was spayed, we got to suture her skin using the inverted interrupted technique. It was so interesting to see a different suture technique instead of simple interrupted. Also in Belize, they mostly spay on the side instead of the midline to decrease the risk of infection. And also because whereas Americans are more showy with their pets, Belizeans aren’t.
At 9 pm it was time to celebrate for new years eve π€© our dinner was made from chef Dr T haha. It was absolutely delicious!!
We saw a BUNCH of fireworks &Β it was so much fun. It was definitely a new years to rememberβ€οΈ
I didn’t get back until 2 am (Belize believes in go big or go home haha) and I slept the night away π₯³
Day 5 Iguanas 1/1/20
Today was considered our free day where we didn’t have class because it was new years day. I ate breakfast at 9:30 am and I had the fruit platter which had: papaya, watermelon, cantaloupe, and yogurt with granola!
We learned about the iguana conservation project in San Ignacio! We got to pick up and hold live iguanas!
For lunch, I wasn’t that hungry so I went to a shop that had bubble tea, milk shakes, slushies, and more. I found it so cool that Belize has bubble tea!! β€οΈ
Around 2 pm we got to learn a cultural dance haha. We also got to see a live Belizean drumming performance with a cultural dance! We drank a garifuana drink called the sahou cassava drink! it’s only available once a year! One of the perfomers made us the drink and it was so good!
We all had dinner at a place called Guava Limb and I WAS BLOWN AWAY BY HOW GOOD THE FOOD WAS. Guava Limb is THE BEST place to eat in Belize and no one can deny. It was BEYOND hard for me to choose which meal to get. I finally came to a decision and got the Hawaiian pizza which had FRESH tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, pineapple (yes I’m a pineapple on pizza fan), and smoked ham. I got to see my whole pizza pie being made which I found so cool! I also got the blueberry cheesecake WHICH WAS SOO TASTY. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND going to guava limb and I wish I had a Guava Limb by me.
After dinner, I studied over my notes and then went to sleep π€
Day 6 Ruminants & icecream 1/2/20
Woke up at 8 am & had the granola with fruit breakfast as the day before!
Then, there was a lecture on animal diseases and large animal reproduction. We also learned the different ways to restrain a dog and we got to practice on the veterinarian’s dog.
After, we had lunch at 12 pm and I had the famous Belizean rice and beans! This time I tried a new spicy sauce that had mango in it & it was so tasty π!
Around 1 pm we gave sheep vaccines!! It was my first time giving a vaccine and I’m so happy that I was able to learn how to do it! We also learned how to trim hooves! I never learned how to do that so it was amazing learning how.
My friends and I ate dinner around 6 pm at a place called Maxim’s which had a mix of asian and Belize food. (I don’t recommend) After, we visited the icecream shop (thats the actual name which is covenient and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND) where we enjoyed ourselves some of the exotic flavors of icecream!! I had a scoop of the spiked mocha peppermint and a scoop of the cookie monster β€οΈ
After, it was time to call it an early night because of the adventure that awaits the next day!
