This summer program running from July to the beginning of August provides students invaluable field experience in Little Cayman Island through living and studying at the Central Caribbean Marine Institute’s tropical field station, the Little Cayman Research Centre. The program involves dive trips, field trips to marine protected areas and replenishment zones, training in field methods, lab and field work with research staff, lectures and discussions, and data collection and analysis. During the program, students develop and present a directed independent team research project. For more information, see below:

My name is Cara Angelastro. I am an undergraduate student at Rutgers Camden. My major is biology with a minor in psychology. I currently work around animals at Petsmart in the grooming salon and have my scuba diving certification. My goals for my education is to get a degree in biology and focus on marine biology and oceanography. This internship at Little Cayman Island with CCMI will give me an opportunity to work with others in the marine biology field and count towards marine biology credits at Rutgers.

I am currently a Junior at Rutgers University, New Brunswick studying Directed Marine Sciences with a minor in Fisheries Science. I transferred from the University of New Haven where I was studying Marine Biology and Environmental Science. I have previously interned at the Mystic Aquarium in the Education and Conservation Department. I have also interned for SURF, the summer undergraduate research fellowship, completing research in salt marsh restoration in Stonington, CT at Dodge Paddock and Beal and Barn Island. I hope to pursue a career in Fisheries Management and work under NOAA or a university. Lastly, the Coral Reef Internship held in the Cayman Islands will allow me to achieve a life-long dream of scuba diving on a tropical reef and studying coral reefs!

I'm a sophomore at Rutgers University-New Brunswick studying Marine Biology. Whenever I can I go fishing and I play soccer. I am excited to go to the Cayman Islands for the first time because I have never seen coral reefs in person. I have always seen the beautiful reefs on documentary films and movies. One of the of the biggest reasons that I am excited about going to Little Cayman will be the people I get to meet and work together in order to understand the ecosystem surrounding the reefs. I am very thankful that I can take part of this journey as a rising junior with a major so awesome to have.
