The National Science Foundation provides funding opportunities for the creation of international research experiences for undergraduates through the NSF-REU program. This program is designed to engage undergraduate students in research and proposals for international experiences are welcome. The NSF-REU funding is competitive and is not designed for traditional faculty-led study abroad programming. More information can be found here on the NSF-REU website.
Rutgers Global provides limited funding to support study abroad initiatives through their Internationalizing the Curriculum grants. These grants are designed to assist faculty in preparing students to meet global competencies through funding innovative curriculum design or program development. This grant has two categories: internationalizing at home and study abroad. Successful applications for study abroad programming should consider the following:
Curriculum integration
- Identify current or new partner institution(s) that can serve as a host for our students
- Map new or existing study abroad programs into the curriculum of a department, major, or school
Program Development
- Creating and running a new faculty-led study abroad program (short course or semester based)
- Programs should be thoughtfully tied to degree or major requirements
- Inclusive of a strategic recruitment plan and sustainability of the program post-grant completion
Outreach
- Strategies for recruitment inclusive of social media, website design, email, face-to-face
- Consider potential connections to outside offices and interdisciplinary curriculum and support
Assessment
- What modes of assessment will be used to measure internationalization and student success
