Off-campus housing is an option for all students, regardless of their situation. However, if you are new to Rutgers, we highly recommend that you live on campus at least for one semester. Research shows that living on campus has a positive impact on students’ academic success and that students are likely to build deeper connections with their peers and faculty members. Once you get a better feel for the area, you will be more knowledgeable about finding a suitable place for youto live.
Most students live close to campus, such as Highland Park or around Cook/Douglass and College Avenue Campuses.
Rutgers University Off-Campus Living and Community Partnerships provides an online database where students can find housing suitable to their needs. These are rental properties submitted by local, private landlords, and apartment complexes. Students can also find listings for roommates and post their own listing on this database. Off-Campus Living and Community Partnerships also works with students if you are having issues with your landlord or co-tenants.
Transportation and Parking on Campus
If you are considering buying a car, please keep in mind that student parking is not available on Cook/Douglass Campus during the day unless you live on campus. During the day, student parking is only available on Busch and College Avenue Campuses, but spaces are very limited. You may choose to park off-campus, but please keep in mind that parking in New Brunswick can be expensive.
There are campus buses within and between campuses in New Brunswick for free and you can find the bus routes and schedules online. You can also check for bus schedules in real time through Rutgers Mobile App. For more information about parking on campus and buses/transit, please visit the Department of Transportation Services website.
